City of Johannesburg blesses primary school learners with school shoes

100 learners received school shoes in Alexandra, setting them up for a year of feet ready for school.

The City of Johannesburg Speaker of Council, Nobuhle Mthembu, spent time with the learners and staff at Carter Primary School in Alexandra on January 31, where her office donated school shoes to learners.

The gesture was aimed at restoring dignity and confidence to young learners in the township community, through this initiative launched as part of the office of the speaker’s back-to-school campaign in January, to assist disadvantaged learners as they begin the new academic year.

100 learners received brand-new school shoes through the campaign, made possible through the supportive contribution of Glenryck SA.

Speaking at the handover, Mthembu highlighted the significance of the campaign in ensuring that no child is left behind due to financial constraints. “We came to the school not only to share words of encouragement but also to extend a helping hand as these young learners embark on their 2025 academic journey. Taking the legislature to the people is at the core of our mandate, and today, that means providing practical support in the form of school shoes.

“While education falls under the provincial government, we believe it is our duty to support our communities in any way possible. This partnership is a testament to the importance of collaboration between government and the private sector.”

Sakkie Luther, from Glenryk SA, expounded on the company’s dedication to the upliftment of young learners in underprivileged communities.

“Education is the golden key that unlocks opportunities for our youth, and Glenryck is proud to be part of this journey,” said Luther. “This initiative reflects our commitment to education in South Africa.

“Our collaboration with the City of Johannesburg demonstrates how the public and private sectors can work together to bring meaningful change. This initiative underscores the vital role that corporate entities play in shaping the future of our youth.”

The back-to-school campaign by the office of the speaker will continue in other regions of the city, reaching more learners in need, and ensuring they start their school year on the right foot.
