Johannesburg deeds office remains closed as elevator issues persist

Ongoing lift breakdowns in Johannesburg's deeds office leave property registrations in disarray, with no resolution in sight.

Property registrations in Johannesburg remain in a state of limbo as the city’s deeds office has been closed since last week, following the shutdown of lifts in the 32-storey building that houses its operations. The closure was initiated by the Department of Employment and Labour due to non-compliance issues concerning the elevators.

While the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) has confirmed that the deeds office itself is not officially closed, it has acknowledged the significant building challenges preventing access to essential services. The DALRRD is currently working in conjunction with the Department of Public Works to address these pressing issues. However, without a clear timeline for when operations will resume, the office has stated that it cannot render any services “until further notice.”

This ongoing situation has raised concerns among legal and property professionals. On Wednesday, Du Plessis Van Loggenberg Attorneys took to social media to emphasise the impact of the lift shutdown, stating, “Due to the elevators at the Johannesburg Deeds Office being shut down by the Department of Labour, they are unfortunately closed and unable to operate until further notice.”

Similarly, Tuckers Attorneys issued a formal notice regarding the closure, informing clients and business partners of the severe implications of the lack of access to key floors. With the situation persisting, stakeholders in the property sector are left to navigate a landscape rife with uncertainty, dependent on timely updates regarding the resumption of services.

As efforts continue to resolve the issues, clients are encouraged to remain in contact for any urgent enquiries while hoping for a swift resolution to restore smooth operations at the Johannesburg Deeds Office.
