Fifth suspect added to Tebogo Thobejane’s attempt murder case

Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says a fifth suspect has been added to the attempted murder case of Tebogo Thobejane, for money laundering.

A 23-year-old woman has been named as the fifth suspect in the high-profile attempted murder case of Tebogo Thobejane. The suspect made a brief appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said: “On the first case, in terms of the attempted murder of Tebogo Thobejane, we have added a fifth suspect that appeared this morning, and has been charged with money laundering. The 23-year-old female is the daughter of one of the hitmen that was arrested in connection with the attempted murder.”

Musa Kekana, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, and Tsakani Matlala, Vusimuzi’s wife, appeared before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on July 11. The group faced charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.

According to the prosecution, Cat allegedly financed the plot by transferring funds from his business account to a business account belonging to Mabusela’s daughter. A significant portion of this money was then funnelled to Mabusela’s own business account, forming the basis of the money laundering charges.

While the initial court appearance on July 11 only named Cat, Tsakani, and Mabusela in connection with the money laundering allegations, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has also confirmed that the alleged hitman’s daughter is now also facing charges related to the financial transactions.

NPA regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the fifth suspect in the Sandton docket, which includes Cat and his co-accused, will join the rest of the accused on October 26, when the matter returns to court.
