FC Raycon Ladies lose 2-1 to Emmarentia Pirates in Sasol League

Raycon’s coach Koketso Matsemela admits that Emmarentia's ability to exploit Raycon’s defensive line underscored their 2-1 victory at Alex Safe Hub over the weekend.

FC Raycon Ladies suffered a 2-1 defeat against Emmarentia Pirates FC in a tightly contested Sasol League match at Alex Safe Hub on Saturday.

Raycon coach Koketso Matsemela attributed their loss to Emmarentia’s strategic approach. He said the visitors did their homework very well, noting that their effective low-block strategy stifled Raycon’s possession-based style.

“They knew we believed in moving the ball around and keeping possession, so they played a low block. They knew we were going to push the ball forward,” said Matsemela.

The home side, desperate for maximum points to boost their league standing, started well and optimistically but struggled to break down Emmarentia’s compact defence. Matsemela admitted the team’s ambition may have cost them. “We wanted to win the game desperately, and I think that’s why the result didn’t go our way. We even changed how we play, pushing more people to the front, and that led us to make many errors.”

Matsemela said Emmarentia capitalised on Raycon’s aggressive approach, exploiting transitions with two skillful strikers who troubled Raycon’s defenders. “Whenever they got the ball, they played it behind our defence, and it was difficult for our defenders to deal with that,” Matsemela shared, adding that their defender eventually made an error, which enabled Emmarentia to score their opening goal.

Emmarentia doubled their lead before halftime, putting Raycon on the back foot. In response, Matsemela made tactical changes in the second half, substituting a defender for a striker to chase the game. The move brought some reward, with Raycon earning a penalty that they converted just over 10 minutes before the final whistle. Despite the late goal, time ran out for Raycon to find an equaliser.

Reflecting on the performance, Matsemela remained optimistic despite the loss. “Looking at the score, I think we worked hard to maintain our shape and avoid conceding more. We had massive changes to our lineup compared to the last game.”
