From a single Facebook post to setting their eyes on the global stage, four young dancers from Alexandra’s Imbumba Dance Group blend unique styles to win the Global Dance Supreme Competition.
A single click on a Facebook post and a bold leap of faith propelled four talented dancers of Imbumba Dance Group to take on the Global Dance Supreme Competition in the Mini Crew category.
The group was formerly known as Gomora Future Stars and consists of Sboniso Prince Motaung, Sphiwe Clopas Gumede, Anesipho Magushana, and Mathhew Dumisani.

Competing in the category, this group from Alexandra fused their distinct dance styles into a captivating performance that pleased the audiences and won the top prize, setting them on a path to compete in the second leg of the competition in Cape Town.
The group’s creative director, Mojalefa Mogagabe, said each member of Imbumba brought a unique style to the stage, blending diverse dance styles into a seamless presentation. All under 30, these dancers are driven by a shared mission to inspire hope and showcase the power of dedication in their community.
“We have one spirit and one strategy every time. Wherever we go, whatever we do, we’re in it to win it,” said Mogagabe. “So, the group went there knowing that we were there to win. We gave it our all; it has been 12 hours of rehearsals over four weeks.”

Mogagabe emphasised that in a township often overshadowed by challenges such as crime, drug abuse, and teenage pregnancy, Imbumba’s dancers aimed to defy these norms, positioning themselves as a beacon in Alexandra. “We see ourselves as the light at the end of the tunnel,” he shared.
The group’s ambitions extend far beyond local stages and aim to be on the international stage. “We want to explore beyond our capabilities. We want to be a household name, be it at sports events, cultural events, and theatres, you name it.”
Now, as they focus on winning the Cape Town competition, Mogagabe emphasised that they plan to win that competition as well, so that they could represent South Africa in a prestigious competition in Dubai. “We are putting our efforts to with the competition and go to Dubai, and we are also planning to win there as well.”
From Alexandra’s streets to Sandton, Cape Town, and soon Dubai, Imbumba Dance Group’s journey embodies resilience and aspiration, especially in Alex, where hopelessness thrives amid socio-economic challenges. As they prepare for their next chapter, Imbumba continues to dance toward a brighter future.
