Matlala, along with four co-accused: Tiego Floyd Mabusela, Musa Kekana, Tsakani Matlala, and Nthabiseng Nzama, made a brief appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. They face charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.

The case stems from an ambush on Thobejane and a friend on the N1 highway near Sandton in 2023, where their vehicle was shot at, leaving Thobejane’s friend wounded.

During a prior appearance on July 11, the defence raised concerns about incomplete case document disclosure, leading to the initial postponement.

Matlala, Mabusela, and Kekana remain in custody, while Tsakani Matlala and Nzama, who was added as a fifth suspect on July 22 in relation to money laundering charges, are out on bail.

The four co-accused are scheduled to return to court on October 7, when two other cases are expected to be centralised.
