Cell phone access from within the high-security walls of Kgosi Mampuru C-Max prison, alleged tracking of investigators’ vehicles, and possession of their personal information – these are just some of the allegations surrounding Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, whose alleged resourcefulness and suspected network of connections have raised concerns about the safety of witnesses and investigators involved in his case.
Despite these fears, the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) regional spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, assured the public that they will do their best to ensure the protection of witnesses. She was speaking outside the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, shortly after Matlala’s bail was denied in the attempted murder case of Tebogo Thobejane.

“We continue our work, as the criminal justice system, working collaboratively with SAPS and the Hawks. We will do our best to ensure that our witnesses are protected.”
During the bail hearing, the court heard concerning details about Matlala’s alleged reach and influence.
The state revealed that Matlala was allegedly in possession of information about the investigating officers, including their vehicle registration details and personal cell phone numbers. Chats found on his phone reportedly contained this data, along with video clips of the officers’ vehicle taken during an active investigation.
Furthermore, the state alleged that Thobejane reportedly received multiple calls from individuals closely aligned with Matlala.

According to the state, Thobejane was warned about Matlala’s dangerous nature and urged to withdraw charges. Thobejane fled South Africa following the attempted hit, citing fears for her safety. SAPS national spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed the gravity of the threat.

“We’ve had to beef up security for our investigators. The lives of witnesses in all these cases are at risk. Like the NPA has highlighted, he is a dangerous man. We welcome the court’s decision.”
Matlala is charged in connection with the 2023 attempted murder of Thobejane on the N1 near Sandton. He faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of attempted murder, and money laundering.
Through his defence advocate, Laurence Hodes SC, Matlala denied all allegations brought against him by the state. He informed the court of his intention to plead not guilty should the matter proceed to trial, expressing confidence in his eventual acquittal.
“I am certain that I will be found not guilty at the close of the state’s case,” he stated, “as there is no evidence upon which a court, acting reasonably, could convict me.”
