Hospitalised suspect to face car theft charge in Alexandra

A 29-year-old man, arrested after a suspected stolen BMW was intercepted in Alexandra, will face charges once medically cleared for court appearance.

A 29-year-old man is set to face charges after being arrested in connection with a suspected stolen blue BMW, while two other suspects remain at large.
The three were intercepted by Community Active Protection (CAP) tactical officers on the corner of 19th Avenue and Reverend Sam Buti Street in Alexandra. The suspect, who was injured after being shot by a CAP officer, remains hospitalised under police custody and will face charges once medically cleared.

According to Alexandra Police Station Commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane, the man will be charged with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, while investigations to identify and apprehend the other suspects continue.

The arrest took place on September 10 following a chase that began in Yeoville and ended in Alexandra. CAP security personnel had attempted to stop the vehicle in Yeoville under suspicion that it was stolen. When the occupants allegedly refused to comply, a pursuit ensued, and the suspects were eventually intercepted in Alexandra.

The suspects fled the scene on foot, but according to Alexandra Police Station commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane, the 29-year-old suspect allegedly re-entered the car and reached for a firearm, prompting a CAP officer to discharge a single shot. The suspect sustained a gunshot wound to the side of his abdomen. Although CAP officers told the police that the suspect attempted to reach for a weapon, no firearm was recovered at the scene. Police suspect the other suspects may have taken it during their escape. Ngubane confirmed that the matter is under investigation.

Police reports further indicate that the vehicle may have been used in the commission of other crimes. Ngubane said the suspects are allegedly linked to two separate cellphone robbery incidents in Sandton and Bramley. According to reports, the suspects would drive around in the BMW, stop when they spotted a potential victim, and then pounce.

At present, the 29-year-old will only face charges related to possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. No charges related to the alleged cellphone robberies have been filed, as those incidents occurred outside the jurisdiction of the Alexandra Police Station.
