Blue Birds’ loss to Emmarentia partly attributed to fatigue, coach says

Blue Birds coach Malvin Khumalo says back-to-back fixtures cost his ‘fatigued’ team points in a match against Emmarentia Pirates FC.

Emmarentia Pirates FC capitalised on a weary Blue Birds Ladies Foootball Academy to secure a 2–1 win at the Pirates Club Greenside on September 24. This marks their second triumph over the Blue Birds in the Sasol League this year, following a narrow 4–3 victory in their earlier encounter.

Matches between the two sides have been characterised by intense competition, with Emmarentia emerging victorious. Their latest game, on Wednesday, was no exception, though fatigue appeared to play a decisive role, at least according to Blue Birds coach Malvin Khumalo. “We were exhausted and could not play. That is one of the reasons we lost the game. We tried to make substitutes, but that did not help.”

The Blue Birds had little time to recover between fixtures, playing back-to-back games on September 20 and 21. After a brief rest on Monday, and a light training session on Tuesday, they returned to the pitch on Wednesday, but not at full strength. “On Tuesday, when they came back to practice, I could see that the legs were gone. Wednesday was very tough. I think the timing of the Wednesday game was not right. I remember when the fixture came, I was angry at how it was set up.”

Khumalo revealed that the scheduling confusion was due to miscommunication. Initially, the team agreed to a catch-up game on Sunday, believing they had no midweek fixture. “But after the Sunday fixture was finalised, then the issue of the Wednesday fixture came up. If I knew, I would have said no to the Sunday game.”

Despite the setback, the team managed to bounce back on September 27, edging log leaders Diepkloof Ladies 1–0 at the Alex Safe Hub. “Today, we were in much better shape. We recovered. The team delivered a performance I am proud of.”
