Share a Bread initiative nourishes Alex’s vulnerable children

On Heritage Day, four Alexandra-based organisations received a timely donation of bread, turning a week of scarcity into a moment of nourishment for children, youth, and the elderly.

This year’s Heritage Day was not just a celebration, but a moment of relief and gratitude for some organisations in Alexandra.
The Share a Bread Heritage Day initiative, run by Ward 116 councillor Adolph Marema and supported by Time to Care, delivered loaves of bread to four local organisations that needed them the most.

At Lion of Judah NPO, where vulnerable children are fed at least three times a week, the donation arrived during a week of deep uncertainty. “It was one of those difficult weeks. I didn’t know what I would have given them [children],” founder Zandile Majola said, adding that the bread ensured that every child was fed and fully nourished.

Joyce Hlomuka, who works closely with children at Luthando Labantwana, noted that school holidays often brought heightened food insecurity. “Hunger is at its peak when the children are at home,” she said. “The bread helped a lot of children.” For her, the initiative was a timely intervention that met the children’s pressing needs.

Boitumelo Lesejane, founder of Unique Minds Academy, had planned a modest Heritage Day event to teach children about pride in their culture and roots. But as attendance grew, so did the pressure. “Our food was not enough. The donation helped a lot,” she said. “Most of the children go hungry, but on that day, they were fully nourished.”
Khensani Day Care also received food.

Marema noted that they were celebrating the day through Ubuntu. “A reminder that our culture is rooted in sharing, caring, and community.”

For the organisations on the ground, it was a reminder that collaboration can turn scarcity into abundance and that even the smallest acts of generosity can nourish more than just the body.
