Skeen and Iphutheng take top honours in Discovery Alex Schools League

Year after year, the Discovery Alex Schools League continues to spotlight Alexandra’s rising football talent.

As the sun set over Three Square Sports Field in Alexandra, the final whistle marked the end of the highly competitive 2025 Discovery Alex Schools League and the beginning of a celebration.
Skeen Primary School’s boys and Iphutheng Primary School’s girls stood tall as winners of the league, collecting their first-place prizes after weeks of determined play.

The event, held on November 5, brought together learners, coaches, and teachers for a celebration of school football that has grown in stature over the years. The finals followed weeks of Wednesday fixtures involving multiple primary schools from across the community, including Ekukhanyisweni, Emfundisweni, Gordon, Ikage, Iphutheng, Ithute, Mc Weiler, Pholosho, Skeen, Dr Knak, Carter, and Zenzeleni.

The girls’ and boys’ third-place play-offs opened the day, followed by the main finals, where Skeen and Iphutheng sealed their victories. Finalists received medals and soccer kits, with trophies handed to the winning teams.

The league offered the learners more than just a shot at silverware. It was a chance for them to be seen by scouts and to take early steps toward a possible football career. Discovery ambassador Benson Mhlongo said the programme was designed to give young players confidence and promote healthy living. “If a learner shows talent both on the field and in their studies, they can get opportunities like scholarships,” he said, noting that two players from last year’s tournament are now studying in Sandton on scholarships.

Project manager Raymond Marutha said the league was part of Discovery’s broader commitment to giving back to less fortunate communities. “Everything from the soccer kits, facilities, referees and meals is already paid for. We are giving them a platform to enhance their careers.

Joseph Mokaba, the coach of Skeen, which has won the league title for the second time in a row, said he was proud of his team’s performance. “We have worked with these boys from a young age. Now that they are heading to high school, we will start again with the next group,” he said.

Celeste Williams, the head of sponsorships at Discovery, said the programme was about building healthier communities. “At Discovery, we believe healthy habits start young. School soccer encourages physical activity, teamwork and resilience. By investing in school–level football, we are nurturing future athletes and building healthier, more confident communities.

Every match played, according to Phumelele Kubeka, the marketing manager at Discovery, was a reminder of the amazing talent rising from Alexandra, and the joy and pride it brings to families and fans.
