Heavenly Choir brings Alexandra a night of self-discovery
Heavenly Choir’s concert at Alex–SanKopano Centre gave Alexandra a rare opportunity – a night to pause, reflect, and rediscover hope through gospel music.
Amid the daily struggles of Alexandra, where poverty, overcrowding, and crime intersect, it is easy for people to lose sight of who they are, in the pursuit of survival.
Yet, on November 15, the Heavenly Choir offered residents a rare reprieve. A chance to pause, reflect, and rediscover themselves through music.
The concert, hosted at the Alex–SanKopano Community Centre, was a well-needed response to the community’s call for identity and belonging in uncertain times.

Refilwe Pieterse, of the Heavenly Choir, explained the objective of the event. “Through the language of music, we seek to create a space where individuals can reflect, reconnect, and rediscover their true selves.” She emphasised that music has the power to speak to the soul in ways words alone cannot.

Pieterse acknowledged that the deepest question confronting people across generations is simple, and that is: ‘Who am I?’. Without clarity, she warned, individuals risk becoming emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually adrift, and the repercussion of this would, as she explained, be the rising levels of anxiety, violence, and divisions in the community.
Through gospel favourites, the choir sought to guide hearts and minds of the attendees toward understanding and self-discovery. “The event is more than a performance; it was a journey of self-discovery.”
She said the evening was refreshing and uplifting. “We danced, our faith was ignited, and we yearned to reconnect with God. We applaud Ntate Johannes Matseke, founder of the Heavenly Choir, for reaching out to the community of Alex. 80 songs were brought to the list, hit after hit. [There] was too much love from the heavenly Choir.”
For one night, Alexandra’s struggles did not disappear, but they did not have the last word either. Music, faith, and community carried the night. The concert became a reminder that, even in hardship, music can restore dignity and faith.
