E-hailing driver falls victim to hijacking in Alexandra

Hijacking incidents are on the rise in Alexandra, and e-hailing drivers remain the most vulnerable as criminals use apps to lure them into ambushes.

An e-hailing driver was hijacked in Alexandra on Tuesday.

Reports indicate that the incident happened between Minerva High School and Pholosho Primary, next to the Astron Energy petrol station on London Road.

This is the second carjacking incident reported in Alexandra in less than three days. On Sunday night, a motorist, who was with his girlfriend inside his car on Joe Nhlanhla Street (formerly known as Vasco), was hijacked at gunpoint by four men.

Although his vehicle was reportedly recovered a day later, the incident, like many others, underscores the growing vulnerability of motorists in the community, especially at night.
Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane has long cautioned motorists to remain vigilant when driving at night, more so in hotspot areas notorious for carjackings, like London Road. In a previous interview with Alex News, he raised concerns about the emerging trend of hijackers using e-hailing apps to target e-hailing drivers, warning that the groups behind such incidents are armed.

He said the local police station recorded multiple cases of carjackings involving ride-hailing.

The rapid increase of these carjacking incidents was properly highlighted by SAPS crime statistics, released in the second quarter of 2025/26. The stats place Alexandra among the country’s worst-hit areas for carjackings, with Alex Police Station ranking 3rd on the country’s list of top 30 stations battered by carjackings.

Between July and September this year, the station recorded a 53% increase in carjacking incidents compared to the same period last year.

Although the carjackings in the provinces dropped by 3%, the stats show that Alexandra is bucking the trend. Now, e-hailing drivers and motorists bear the brunt of a crime wave that shows little sign of slowing down.
