Still no answers on Vincent Ndima’s fatal shooting as investigations continue

Months after the fatal shooting of crime-fighter Vincent Ndima, police say no witnesses have come forward.

Five months after the fatal shooting of crime fighter and community activist Vincent Ndima in Alexandra, police said residents who may have witnessed the attack have yet to come forward.

Ndima and a friend were ambushed by gunmen while driving along Joe Nhlanhla Street in October last year. Ndima died in a hail of bullets, while his friend sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

Since then, the community has pressed police to solve the high-profile murder. But with suspects still at large, frustration is mounting.

Alexandra Police Station commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane said he understands the community wants convictions and arrests, but the incident happened in public, and not a single witness has come forward with credible information.

“All we have heard so far are rumours, and we have to investigate,” Ngubane said.

“A murder can happen right here, and no one will say, ‘Ngubane, I will come and see you, or I will send an audio to tell you what happened.’”

Last month, Ngubane vowed that investigators would not rest until Ndima’s killers are brought to justice. He admitted the process is taking too long but insisted his officers are following up on every lead.

Although he emphasised that Ndima’s docket will not be closed until the case is solved, community silence about that dreadful Monday morning remains a concern.

Ngubane noted how, in some other cases, tip-offs have been instrumental in helping the police identify suspects.

“I appreciate that they are telling me about drugs, and they are making an impact on that one. Even on carjackings, I have suspects,” Ngubane said. He said they have even identified the location of the carjacking suspects and are following up on that because of the tip-offs they received from anonymous sources.

But no such information has been shared regarding Ndima’s shooting. Police continue to appeal to residents to share information that could help investigators.
