Government launches voter registration drive for 2026 local government elections
All South African citizens aged 18 and older are urged to register to vote as the countdown to the 2026 local government elections begins, with online registration already open.
The department of government communication and information system has called on citizens to exercise their democratic right ahead of the 2026 local government elections, reminding them that voting empowers citizens to have a direct say in how their country and communities are governed.
Voter registration will take place on June 20 and 21.
Citizens are encouraged to use the IEC Voter Information Portal at https://registertovote.elections.org.za to register to vote, update their details, verify their address, apply for a special vote, or locate their voting station.

Alternatively, they can make an appointment to register in person during office hours at their nearest IEC office.
Citizens may register to vote from the age of 16; however, voting is only permitted from the age of 18.
Active participation in elections strengthens democracy by ensuring leadership reflects the will and needs of the people.
Voting also promotes accountability by holding elected representatives answerable to the people they serve.
