Milly encourages models to leverage the power of a sash
Milly Nkube Seromo says wearing a sash gives one the attention they need to build networks and connections to succeed in life.
While some models wear crowns and sashes with pride, enjoying the fleeting glory, Milly Nkube Seromo encourages others to leverage the momentary attention to pave their way to success.
She noted that wearing a sash gave one the attention they needed, and they should use that spotlight to network with people who will contribute to their success, even outside of the modelling industry.

“I use my platform to not only grow within the modelling industry but also my network outside of modelling. We call it the power of a sash,” said the 26-year-old model and businesswoman.

Beyond personal gain, the Gauteng Pageant Awards Best Pageant Queen 1st Princess uses her platform to bring about change in her community. Drawing words of wisdom from historical figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, she said that people ought to be the change they wanted to see in their community. “I simply lead by example. When people see greatness, they want to know and learn how it was all achieved so that they follow suit,” she shared.

Obtaining her 1st Princess position was not a quick and easy feat, it was a culmination of hard work and more than five years of modelling experience. She reflected on her experience and recalled how the Gauteng Pageant Awards organisation had learned about her journey on social media. “Sometimes we feel demotivated and as though our lives are stagnant, until you realise that someone out there is watching,” she said, emphasising that hard work can never go unnoticed.

As a mentor of the Mr and Miss Alexandra organisation, she encourages models to work hard and persevere. Furthermore, she encourages them to build their social media presence and to work on their community initiatives. Most importantly, she cautions models to be aware of the addictive nature of a sash and a crown, noting that models might end up losing the purpose for which they became models. “You end up becoming a sash collector who does not have any real impact. Do not allow yourself to be pressured into this cycle. Give yourself time to serve your full 12 months after being crowned.”
