Alexandra Field Band’s fundraising show lights up Skeen Primary

Young musicians and dancers rocked Skeen Primary School in Alexandra, showcasing township talent while raising funds for the National Championships.

A band blasting rhythmic music, young dancers commanding the stage, and parents watching in awe—this was the scene at Skeen Primary School in Alexandra during a lively talent show hosted by the Alexandra Field Band Foundation on Saturday. The event was intended to raise funds for the Field Band Foundation National Championships, set for October 11 at the Wanderers Stadium.

Social officer, Neo Rammopo, said the competition will feature 10 different bands from across South Africa. “It’s an annual event we participate in,” she said. “We need uniforms and a week-long training camp to prepare. This show is part of our fundraising efforts.”

The team has been preparing for the competition for almost a year now. She added that after months of time and dedication, it would mean a lot for the band to win the championships.

“Almost every day, these children dedicate their lives, their time to come and learn the skill that enables them to produce something wonderful and beautiful,” she said. “So, just having the chance to showcase it to the rest of the people out there is a great feat.”

Last year, the band won six awards, including Best Visual/Show Design, and celebrated with a township parade on October 6.

Beyond music, the foundation teaches life skills, covering topics like substance abuse and teenage pregnancy. “We’re helping kids grow into better people,” Rammopo said.

The talent show featured performances from young band members, alumni, and parents. Programme manager Phumzile Thwala said parents learned basic instrument skills to join in. “They taught the parents the basics, and they played instruments together,” she said, emphasising how that created a fun experience for everyone.

Towards the end, band members, alumni, and parents danced together. Thwala introduced the alumni to current members, noting how they’ve grown and some have pursued music careers. Their energetic performance marked the event’s conclusion, leaving the crowd in high spirits.
