Court postpones ‘KT’ Molefe’s case as state seeks to consolidate multiple dockets

The case against Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe has been postponed as the state works to merge it with other dockets tied to high-profile murders, including the killings of DJ Vintos, Armand Swart, and Don Tindleni.

As the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court continued hearing matters on Tuesday morning, one familiar figure sat quietly in the public gallery, Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe. This time, he waited for his case to be called — without chains on his feet.

He was granted R400 000 bail in October after successfully appealing an earlier decision by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to deny him bail. The appeal was heard in the High Court in Johannesburg.

Molefe, who the state argues was the mastermind behind multiple high-profile ‘assassinations’ and the three alleged hitmen, Michael Pule Tau, Musa Kekana, and Floyd Tiego Mabusela, are charged in connection with the 2022 murders of popular musician Oupa ‘DJ Sumbody’ Sefoka and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza. The three were shot and killed in Woodmead, Gauteng.

All accused except Tau made a brief appearance on November 11. Tau’s absence, combined with the state’s ongoing efforts to centralise related dockets, led to a postponement of the case to December 3.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed that the dockets under consideration for centralisation are from Vereeniging and Johannesburg.

These include the 2024 killing of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart, who was gunned down in a hail of bullets, the fatal shooting of Hector ‘DJ Vintos’ Buthelezi in Orlando East, months before DJ Sumbody’s death, and the murder of Don Tindleni, who was shot on the N1 highway in Johannesburg.

Mjonondwane said they are still awaiting feedback on the centralisation application submitted to the office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions.

“Once we receive that feedback, we will be in a position to transfer the matter to the High Court,” Mjonondwane said. “But for now, because we are still waiting, we have requested a further postponement to December 3.”

Speaking about Tau’s absence in court, Mjonondwane said they are yet to communicate with the Correctional Services to establish the reasons for his absence. “He is in custody on other matters. So, we rely on the Correctional Services to bring them to court.”

Tau, Kekana and Mabusela, who are currently in custody, will appear in court alongside Molefe next month.
