Midrand resident Ntokoto Mabasa, facing charges over the fatal stabbing of her boyfriend Xichavo Ntsanwisi, is expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on November 25.

The 22-year-old was granted R10 000 bail last month after spending nearly two weeks in custody. She was released on condition that she reports weekly to the Midrand Police Station.

Her bail was unopposed by both the investigating officer and the prosecutor, who left the decision to the court’s discretion. Presenting Mabasa’s affidavit making an argument for bail, her lawyer, Maanea Ramashia, noted that exceptional circumstances warranted her release.

Mabasa told the court she has no prior convictions, no pending cases, and is not a flight risk as she does not own a passport. She added that she is pursuing higher education, and her continued detention would jeopardise her studies. Her sister, who pays her fees, warned that she would stop funding Mabasa if she failed.

The magistrate ruled that Mabasa cannot interfere with evidence or investigations.

“On a balance of probabilities, the applicant has succeeded in proving that the interests of justice warrant her release on bail.”

During the bail hearing, the court heard that the couple had been in conflict. A witness claimed Ntsanwisi assaulted Mabasa before they entered their apartment, where he was fatally stabbed on September 22 in Midrand.

Although the deceased’s family expressed disappointment at the bail ruling, his brother Jacob Ntsanwisi said the state has a strong case and will challenge Mabasa’s version of events when the matter goes to trial.
