A closer look at crime in the first month of 2026 in Alexandra

Alexandra Police Station has recorded alarming levels of violent crime in January, with nine murders, six attempted murders, and thirty cases of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm reported in just 28 days.

Alexandra Police Station has been grappling with a myriad of contact crimes.

While the recent figures indicating reported cases of violent crime in Alexandra are alarming, they are not shocking, especially considering the crime profile of the local station on SAPS national crime statistics. The station has consistently featured among the nation’s top 30 stations dealing with high counts of crimes, including murder, attempted murder, sexual assault, rape, and carjacking.

When Visible Policing Commander Colonel Jerry Phaswana took the stage at AlexSan Kopano Resources Centre on January 28 to give residents an overview of crime in the community in the first month of the year, he painted a picture just as grim as that already reflected in the SAPS crime stats for the second quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year.

Phaswana revealed that in just 28 days of the new year, nine people had been murdered in Alexandra, and police recorded six cases of attempted murder. Furthermore, the station reported 30 cases of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and 53 cases of common assault.

Some of the reported cases of crime in January were firearm-related, including robbery with aggravating circumstances. At least 14 of the 40 cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances recorded this year in Alexandra involved a firearm, according to Phaswana.

Additionally, police revealed that in January alone, eight cases of rape, some occurring in the early hours as women walk home from drinking spots, eight reported cases of burglary at residential places, three cases of burglary at business premises, and 31 cases of malicious property damage, which Phaswana linked to property-related disputes.

Police said that 18 vehicles were hijacked in Alexandra, and at least 11 cases of theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles were reported. Phaswana revealed that some of these vehicles are those stolen during the night while owners are asleep.

He emphasised that collaboration between the police and the community remains key to addressing crime in Alexandra. He said that community patrollers are needed to curb the theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles. With regard to unlicensed firearms, he stressed the need for residents to provide information to police. “It is only through you giving us information that we can make sure we remove these firearms from the community and the people that are using them.”

He said the same about hijacking incidents, noting that some community members know the culprits but are not giving police any information.

Ngubane noted that police have employed different strategies to deal with illegal firearms. He said crime intelligence gathers information about these firearms, while uniformed officers conduct stop-and-search operations to find them.
