Dark City Sessions marks four years with epic milestone celebration

Dark City Sessions celebrated its fourth anniversary by taking hip-hop from Alexandra township to a vibrant new venue at Workshop at 13, proving the movement's unstoppable growth and community spirit.

Dark City Sessions (DCS) marked its four-year milestone on March 1, with what director Sipho Ntjie called a celebration like no other.

Ntjie, known as Tjipo Malankan or ‘Malankane’, who curates and organises DCS, said: “It was a celebration like no other as we did what we do best, collaborate with other movements. We took it out of the township to our new venue in town, called Workshop at 13. It was a huge milestone, as the venue is known for hosting art exhibitions and events. We introduced hip-hop to the space.

“It was an upscaling of energy, starting empty while everyone was outside the warehouse. People were meeting each other, and cyphers started outside. One standout moment was seeing DCS bring rappers together, even those who didn’t think they’d see each other at a hip-hop event again.

“I was the highlight, hosting an event on crutches due to an accident. Big shoutout to our amazing host, Cheez That Loud Guy, alongside Gig guide guru Losh for keeping the energy high”

DJ sets by Rugged Rocka, S’quaret D, and DJ Hihats lit up the night, while prominent people supporting the movement, including founders and organisers of other events turned up. A special thanks went to Nicholas Hlobo for the warehouse space.

The community came in the masses, despite the rain. “An artist showed up unaware of the event and stayed till the end. We made it happen, and his energy captured the audience.” Artists landed features, gigs, and collabs.

Reflecting on growth, Ntjie noted: “The growth we’ve achieved as a team helped us invite big names and collaborate.” The event highlighted Alexandra’s rising hip-hop scene with new talent and fresh partnerships.

Ntjie encouraged the youth by saying: “Get out there and do your thing, it won’t come to you. You have to meet it halfway. Put yourself out there, learn to work with others, and collaborate. The more you’re outside, the more opportunities show themselves. Support others, and stay true to yourself.

“For those who want to be part of DCS sessions, check our Facebook page for updates. We give opportunities to new artists who follow our procedure.”

Year five is coming up soon, as this movement, for the people, by the people, keeps growing.
