The latest Dark City Session’s Hip Hop Stokvel boasts real success

Artists put networking ahead of performing as genuine connections, powerful on-stage organisation speeches, and raw outdoor cyphers defined Sipho Ntjie’s latest Hip Hop Stokvel, delivering a major boost for the underground movement.

The latest Hip Hop Stokvel, on May 3, brought together artists, collectives, and organisations for a powerful celebration of underground hip hop culture.

“The best moments were seeing artists network and not even rush to perform because they were enjoying every moment of connecting and learning more about each other’s movements and organisations,” director Sipho Ntjie said. “Another moment we all enjoyed, collectively, was when the MC gave each organisation a chance to speak on stage about who they are and what they represent.

“New talent managed to shine in their own way. The cyphers outside the venue were also really inspiring because they showed the raw energy and connection within the culture.”

Reflecting on the success of the gathering, Ntjie was clear about its impact. “It definitely achieved its purpose. We managed to come together as organisations to celebrate the underground platform and the recognition and support we have for one another.”

While planning an event of this scale comes with difficulties, Ntjie noted that challenges faded on the day. “Communication was one of the major challenges, especially while handling everything else that comes with organising an event of this nature. However, once everyone came together on the day, the challenges became smaller because the outcome of the event was amazing.”

What stood out most for Ntjie was the strong desire for ongoing collaboration. “What inspired us the most was the idea of collaborating more and more with other organisations. Even after the event, people already started making suggestions and discussing what we can do next.

“Most of the organisations came on board through communication and mutual connections with people already familiar with the movements we were trying to work with.”

Looking ahead, Ntjie is focused on growth through partnership. “The goal moving forward is to continue working more with other organisations and creating benefits for both the collectives and the artists representing them. The next Hip Hop Stokvel will definitely be bigger and have even more to offer.

“Proper planning and collaboration are key to building a successful event and growing the culture.”

For now, the main focus remains continuing to grow the audience gradually over time and building more awareness around the movement.
