Alexandra police arrest at least 50 suspects in a single week
One murder, three attempted murders and four hijackings, Alexandra Station commander explains what happened between September 20 and 26.
At least 50 suspects were arrested for various crimes in Alexandra between September 20 and 26, with immigration-related offences accounting for the largest share.
Alexandra Police Station commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane, who shared the weekly crime outlook, said the station recorded one murder case, on September 26. According to Ngubane, a 37-year-old man was shot dead at an alleged illegal gambling spot on Joe Nhlanhla Street in the early hours of the morning.

He said the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and was declared dead at the scene. No suspects have been arrested, and the investigation continues.
The station also recorded three cases of attempted murder. Ngubane said the first two arose from an incident in which hijacking suspects, pursued by police, allegedly shot at officers before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot. Ngubane said officers subsequently opened an attempted murder docket and recovered a firearm at the scene.
He further revealed that the third attempted murder case allegedly arose from a domestic violence incident, and the suspect was arrested.
Carjackings, which police have consistently acknowledged as a concern, were lower during the period, with four vehicles hijacked and all recovered, although no suspects were arrested. “Those carjackers who target e-hailing drivers, they want cash, belongings and they would also kidnap victims to force them to open their banking apps. After that they would dump the car,” he said.
Rape cases remain a concern, with three recorded and three suspects arrested. “In most rape cases, you would find out that they were raped by someone they know,” Ngubane said.

Assault was the second-highest category of recorded cases, with 19 cases and 14 arrests. It follows immigration-related offences arrests at 23. The gap between cases and arrests widens for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Of 12 recorded cases, only four arrests were made.
Ngubane said a further five suspects were arrested for dealing in drugs.
