A lacklustre Alex United are walloped

BALFOUR PARK - The North West University of the Vaal Football Club came from behind and walloped a lackluster 10 men Alex United 3-1 to bag all three points at stake.

Bottom-of-the-log North West University’s Vaal campus Football Club came from behind to wallop a lacklustre 10-man Alex United 3-1 at Balfour Park Stadium.

United had scored first in this ABC Motsepe League match against a team that has only six points from 13 games. The visitors absorbed all the pressure in the first half of the match as the Hope City Giants, as United is affectionately known, mounted attack after attack. But the resolute defence of the varsity team stood its ground, and United went into the break 1-0 up.

The home team were reduced to 10 men in the second half when their former captain Gavin Abrahams collected two yellow cards in quick succession, meaning a red card and an early shower for the United player.

The visitors capitalised on the situation by moving their lanky defender, Sifiso Nkosi into the strikers role. This move paid dividends as Nkosi’s height enabled him to win most headers inside the box. It was his fellow striker, Thebe Tumelo who found the net first and Nkosi got his reward to make it 2-1 to the visitors. Tumelo hammered the final nail into the coffin to bury United 3-1.

Varsity team assistant coach Tlou ‘Jomo’ Mabotja said the sending off of Abrahams had worked in their favour.

“We also confused them by starting Nkosi in a defensive role and later moved him up front, and they could not contain him.”

Hope City Giants coach Tracy-Lee Pepper admitted she had made some bad substitutions.
