Good luck to the Mighty Buccaneers

JOBURG - Acting CEO of the Premier Soccer League, Mato Madlala wished Orlando Pirates good luck as the team embarks on an epic journey for the second leg of the final of the Confederations of African Football (Caf) Confederations Cup.

The Mighty Buccaneers have a do-or-die date with tricky Tunisian side Etoile Sportive du Sahel in Tunisia, and Madlala urged the Bucs to bring the Confed Cup back to South Africa.

“I back Orlando Pirates to beat Etoile du Sahel this coming weekend, and all of Mzansi will be proud of their feat and achievement,” said Madlala, putting her neck on the block.

The clubs played to a 1-1 draw at a packed Orlando Stadium on 21 November, but Madlala said the Buccaneers have the ability to return home triumphant.

“On behalf of the clubs and our members, we would like to wish Orlando Pirates the best of luck in the Caf Confederations Cup match in Tunisia.

“We know it’s not going to be easy for them, but they have shown a resilient fighting spirit throughout this campaign. I’m therefore confident that they can come back home with the trophy.”

Madlala said it was important for Absa Premiership clubs to do well in continental championships.

“As the league, we have done well in establishing a strong league in financial terms.

“But what we need now is to be competitive and dominant with our football within the African continent. We must support our clubs playing in Caf competitions,” she said.

Madlala, who is well-known as a close friend of Pirates and league chairperson, Dr Irvin ‘Iron Duke’ Khoza, said she knows this is something very close to the heart of Dr Khoza and the league’s executive committee.
