Winter Rose did not expect a draw, says coach
Although Alex Winter Rose came prepared to collect maximum points, their struggles in front of the goal left them ruing missed opportunities in a 1–1 draw against Gunners FC.
Alex Winter Rose FC coach Katlego Khalo was left frustrated after his players failed to convert clear chances in their Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association U15 clash against Gunners FC.
The match, played at the Altrec Sports Complex on February 21, ended in a hard-fought 1–1 draw after 90 minutes of shared possession and missed opportunities.
“I didn’t expect a draw. I expected them to use their chances and score to get three points. Now, we only got one point,” Khalo said after the match.

For him, the team’s difficulty in finding the net stems from a lack of confidence in front of goal, something he admitted he must work on to ensure his players believe in their ability to secure maximum points.

The first half was tight, with both sides sharing possession but failing to convert any meaningful chances. Early in the second half, Gunners’ player Siyabonga Msibi opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick, giving his side a 1–0 lead. The goal rattled Winter Rose, forcing them to chase an equaliser.
Despite several daring but unsuccessful attempts, Winter Rose eventually found their breakthrough. Thokozani Mavuso fired a long-range shot past Gunners goalkeeper Ompha Lukhwareni to level the score at 1–1.

Both teams pushed for a winner, but Mavuso’s strike proved to be the final goal of the match, leaving the sides to share the spoils.
Gunners coach Sizwe Vena was satisfied with the result, noting that he had fielded younger players from the U13 squad. “They are still young, so I am happy with this 1–1 draw,” he said.
