Late goals sink Ma‑Africa in painful defeat to Loyo Stars

Ma-Africa FC looks ahead to redemption against Robertsham Callies FC after suffering a 1-4 defeat to Loyo Stars FC on Saturday.

One could clearly see the final moments that defined Ma‑Africa’s disappointing 1-4 loss to Loyo Stars. For much of the game, Loyo Stars held a narrow 2–1 lead, but it was Peter Nkosi’s late strike, quickly followed by Bafikile Mbundu’s goal, that sealed Ma‑Africa’s fate.

Ma-Africa coach Lucky Zuma admitted that the last two goals made it impossible for his side to equalise, despite their strong late push.

Before those decisive goals in Saturday’s Hollywoodbets Regional League fixture, Zuma had gathered his players at half‑time to highlight the issues they needed to fix.

“We spoke about their mistakes. We tried to rectify them, at least we tried. But in the second half, we allowed them to play. Why? I don’t know,” he said.

His frustration was evident. During a post‑match interview, his first words about the Saturday fixture were that it was a difficult one. Difficult, not because of the game itself, but because he had to watch his side concede avoidable goals and chase points that never came.

In the first half, Ma‑Africa conceded a penalty that Mogomotsi Shaane converted to give Loyo Stars an early lead. Shortly after, Lesego Sabela added another goal.

“We gave them two early goals. We just gave them, and that is where we lost it. By the time we started to really play, it was already late,” Zuma reflected, though his player, Simphiwe Gwala, had managed to pull one back with a free kick.

Despite multiple attempts to beat the keeper, Ma‑Africa failed to convert.

Zuma said he had instructed his players to test the goalkeeper aggressively. “We knew what was going to happen with the goalkeeper. But unfortunately, they couldn’t take their chances.”

Loyo Stars media liaison Ofentse Maphepha explained that the team had been urged at half‑time to push for more goals.

Maphepha said their players were playing positional football, and were not taking shots to extend their lead, at least until that half-time pep talk that prompted them to score two more goals.

“It was expected because we did speak about scoring. We told them they needed to test the goalkeeper and take shots, so it was expected,” Maphepha added.

Maphepha believes Loyo Stars’ 4-1 will reignite their momentum after last week’s narrow 0–1 defeat to Robertsham Callies FC. Ma‑Africa, meanwhile, have already set its sights on Sunday’s fixture against the same opponent that toppled Loyo Stars.
