Agile attacks from Opopo FC overwhelms Happy Fighters in 4–1 victory

Opopo FC’s attacks proved unstoppable, turning early pressure into a four-goal spectacle that left Happy Fighters chasing shadows.

Opopo FC’s bold advance towards Happy Fighters FC’s goalpost made it clear from the onset that the Fighters were not going to have a happy ending to the game.

Just a few minutes into the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association Promotional League fixture at the 3 Square Sports Stadium, the Fighters were already feeling the mounting pressure of Opopo’s agile attacks. It came as no surprise when Opopo FC eventually drew first blood, moments after the opening whistle.

What was surprising, however, was how the Fighters conceded the goal. In a moment that earned him a yellow card, Happy Fighters FC player Neo Marakalla reached for an overhead ball with his hand inside the penalty box, conceding an unnecessary penalty.

Opopo FC’s Siyabonga Mthethwa converted it, giving his side an early lead, but the Fighters responded with determination, creating multiple chances down the right flank. Their persistence paid off when Sphiwukwanda Shezi finally capitalised on a square pass from the wing to bring them level.

Opopo FC coach Lethabo Mphahlele admitted that the opponent relied heavily on a single tactic. “I was concerned, especially with our recovery, but we managed to talk about it and find a solution. We knew they wanted to play through the flank because they are good one-on-one, so we organised and closed them down.”

Although Opopo’s attacks were agile, they often faltered at the opponent’s goalpost and conceded possession. Defensively, they gave away several set pieces, but most of these issues were quickly resolved during halftime.

Shortly after the restart, Opopo’s Matohove Tougnonnou scored with an unexpected long-range shot that went into the net, leaving Fighters’ keeper Malebe Tjale rooted to the spot.

This goal was followed by goals from Lindani Ndlovu and Siyabonga Mthethwa, sealing Opopo’s dominant performance.

“I am happy with the results, but obviously we have to chase more goals because our competitors, such as Alex Royal Tigers FC, Raiders FC, and everyone chasing the title, are scoring, but I am happy with the four goals.”

While some Fighters players tried to stay in the contest, others showed the body language of men who knew the game had slipped away.

Despite the heavy 1–4 defeat, Fighters’ coach Jacky Seruwe praised his team’s effort. “We were just unfortunate to make silly mistakes and allow the opponent to score. I think the boys just lost concentration in the second half.”
