
He is concerned about hijackings and the manner in which these crimes are taking place.
“In most hijackings, the victims claimed they were in their vehicles talking to people. According to the victims, their attackers approached from both sides of the vehicle. All, or one of them, were in possession of a firearm,” said Brigadier Mariemuthoo.
In most cases, the victims had parked their vehicles in dark areas and were talking in the vehicle, either on the phone or to a passenger.
He urged people to park in a safe place or to get out of the vehicle and find a safe area to talk.
Most of the cases reported took place in Bez Valley.
Jeppe SAPS management said they do communicate with City Power regarding broken street lights.
“Another concern is people who are opening false cases. There were several cases where people reported that they were hijacked or their vehicles were stolen. After investigating, we found that the person was never in the place he claimed to be when the vehicle was hijacked or stolen. In most cases, the people opened a false case for insurance purposes, or to hide the truth from their partners, families or employers,” said W/O Munyai.
He said it is a criminal offence to open a false case.
