Head of visible policing at the Cleveland SAPS, Colonel Nkosinathi Miya, said the theft of motor vehicles in the precinct is still high and police officers are trying their best to address the problem.
Cleveland SAPS management has been requesting people to park their vehicles in safer areas for months.
“We were called in to account to province for the increase. We have implemented a number of initiatives to curb the theft of motor vehicles. Problematic suburbs are Kensington and Malvern,” said Col Miya.
He said the Cleveland SAPS has increased patrols but the community’s help is needed.
“Our social crime prevention unit highlights the problem to the community. We find that a lot of people refuse to park behind closed gates and in safe areas. People park outside companies and leave their vehicles unattended for a long time. They also park in dark areas. Please stop this,” said Col Miya.
He also urged people to be careful when they visit shopping centres. He said the attempted theft of motor vehicles has also increased. Thieves using jamming devices have also become problematic and people are advised to ensure their vehicles are locked when they walk away.
