Resident’s Cuppa for Cansa a success
Local residents and businesses recently opened their hearts and pockets without thinking twice in support of people with cancer.

Thousands of Rand were raised in only a few hours at the Cuppa for Cansa event – a true display of how caring and giving the local community is.
The Keurboom Care Home, in Belgravia, is just over R16 500 richer thanks to a local resident, and others, who supported her during the event held at the Kensington Community Centre in Rhodes Park last Saturday.
Zahn Hughes, a Kensington resident who organised the event, was able to pull out all the stops. The full-house event was attended by representatives of other local charity organisations, well-known community members, residents’ associations such as the I Love Kensington Association (Ilka) and the Western Kensington Residents Association and businesses.
Hosts of each table went out of their way to ensure everyone was treated.
Zahn was able to get several local businesses to donate items for lucky draws and auctions. A number of guests who threw their money at the cause left with prizes, vouchers, gift hampers and even a weekend away for two at Sun City valued at over R6 000.
Nick van Tonder, an author and life coach, started the party with great entertainment and managed to rally massive support during the mini auctions.
Neil Lowe, a MasterChef SA 2013 contestant and Kensington resident, was on hand with a scrumptious cake that was auctioned off to raise more funds.
Neil, known as the ultimate science guy of the top 16, spoke about his time at MasterChef and answered questions from guests.
Acclaimed South African poet and artist, Lionel Murcott, shared some of his work and gave away one of his books.
Zahn and Sandi van Tonder, the manager of Keurboom, thanked everyone who made the event a success.
The Keurboom Care Home offers care, support and accommodation to patients undergoing cancer treatment far from home. Patients also receive counselling and emotional support.
