“The conman operates in and around Yeoville and he promises people business opportunities. He then asks people to deposit money into an account,” said Constable Thabo Malatji, of the Yeoville SAPS.
Cases have been registered, where the same modus operandi is used. The conman targets people by sending messages via e-mail or sms, promising them unbelievable business opportunities with large returns on their investment. After the deposit is made, he sends them fake proof of payment receipts. Unsuspecting people wait for the product but it never gets delivered. The suspect then switches off his cellular phone.
“We urge the community to be alert and report any suspicious sounding offers from people before parting with their money,” said Constable Malatji.
