Cyrildene school teacher excels

Cyrildene Primary School teacher, Mr Sikhulu Ngulube, was commended for taking second place in the recent Natural Sciences and Technology Teacher Challenge.

The challenge is an annual competition for all natural sciences and technology teachers from grade 4 to 6 and grade 7 to 9.

The two phases compete separately.

The motivation behind the challenge is to showcase and acknowledge teachers’ skills and to improve the quality of teaching and learning of the subject in schools.

This year, participants had to prepare a one week lesson plan under the theme Energy and Change.

Mr Ngulube, a grade 6 teacher, prepared a detailed lesson plan and submitted it to the Gauteng Department of Education, Johannesburg East District 9.

The top three lesson plans in each district were selected for provincial competitions.

A panel of judges looked at 45 lesson plans from 15 districts in Gauteng and Mr Ngulube’s lesson plan was placed third in the Gauteng Province.

Teachers who produced the top three lesson plans in the province were then invited to a presentation opportunity at the Westridge High School on September 14.

The finalists were required to demonstrate their lesson plan to a group of educators. The judges assessed these lessons and Mr Ngulube came second in the Gauteng Province.

The top three plans will be published in the Gauteng Department of Education natural sciences and technology booklet. Educators can adopt or modify the lesson plan models to improve the teaching of natural sciences and technology.

Mr Ngulube was congratulated by proud pupils and staff at the school.
