Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, the Jeppe SAPS communications officer, said a woman went to an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at the corner of Curry and Siemert streets in Doornfontein to withdraw money on July 20.
“She was standing in a queue with three others. A woman and man were in front of her. They conducted their transactions and left. The victim went to the machine and tried to insert her bank card into the machine but it did not go in. She took her card and as she was turning to leave, the man who was standing in the queue before her came back,” said W/O Munyai.
The man asked her what was wrong and informed the woman that “the machine was operating slowly”.
He grabbed her card and put it in the ATM.
He told the woman to enter her pin code and she did so.
She started doubting if everything was okay and cancelled the transaction.
She then realised that the man who had helped her was gone.
The victim told a staff member at a petrol station what had happened and she was advised to go to a bank and cancel the card.
“She received a message stating money had been withdrawn from her account at an ATM in Beit Street before she was able to get to a bank.
“When she arrived at the bank it was closed. She told the security guard what had happened and he told her he had seen three suspicious people withdrawing money,” said W/O Munyai.
