The Jeppe SAPS arrested a 21-year-old man for armed robbery on Wednesday.
It is alleged that a man was sitting with a friend in his car in End Street, Doornfontein, when they were approached by two men. One of the men was in possession of a firearm.
“The suspect with the firearm pointed it at them and demanded a cellular phone. The victim gave his cellular phone to the suspect. A security guard saw what was happening and called the police,” said Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, the Jeppe SAPS communications officer.
Police officers rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect who was in possession of the firearm. His accomplice escaped.
When police officers took the man to the police station, it was discovered the firearm used during the robbery was a toy gun.
The man was detained and will appear in court soon.
