Residential robberies and burglaries are increasing in Edenvale.
While areas such as the Avenues and Eastleigh continue to be hard hit, other areas such as Hurlyvale and Dowerglen are now also being targeted.
“We are heading into the festive season. Residents are not the only ones looking for a Christmas bonus. Criminals will do anything to get their hands on your property,” said acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts.
He advised residents to be on high alert for suspicious people and vehicles in their areas.
“If you see someone walking down the street, who is not normally in your area, report them to the SAPS or your security provider,” he said.
“Know who your neighbours are and always question a situation you feel uncomfortable with.
“If you feel someone does not belong on your neighbour’s property, or you have not seen that particular person there before, call the police or your security provider to investigate,” said Lt Col Roberts.
Tips:
- Be alert when leaving or arriving at your home.
- Do not wait in driveways and always be aware of your surroundings.
- Do not leave doors and windows open during the day or at night.
- Lock security gates and doors.
- Ensure your alarm system is linked to a security provider and is in working order.
- Inspect electric fences for faults.
- Do not trust strangers who may want to gain access to your property.
- Inform domestic staff of repairs to take place.
- Educate domestic staff to not allow anyone onto the property.
- Do not advertise new items in your house by disposing of boxes on pavements.
“Be cautious when shopping or withdrawing money at standalone ATM’s, or those situated within shopping centres,” said Lt Col Roberts.
If you suspect you are being followed after withdrawing money, do not go home.
“Drive to the closest police station or call the sector police vehicle,” said Lt Col Roberts.
