Identity of remains still unknown
The identity of the skeletal remains found in Kensington in October is still unknown.
The EXPRESS previously reported that a security guard, Mr Alfeus Gumbi, discovered a skull in a drain at the corner of Kitchener Avenue and Lancaster Street. He also saw other remains in the drain close to Lancaster Street and Cambridge Road.
Authorities were notified and they removed the skull and other skeletal remains. Nothing except the skull and remains from the hips down were found.
At the time, authorities believed the human remains may be a male in his mid-20s.
Last week Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said the SAPS is still waiting for forensic results.
“The identity of the deceased is not yet known as results are still outstanding. Blood samples were drawn for DNA comparison and results will be back in a few weeks’ time. The cause of death is also still being investigated,” she said.
She added that two members of the community came forward with the belief that the human remains may be that of their missing family members.
“The missing people are women. One of the women has been missing for about a year and the other for a few months,” said Const Mashakane.
