The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Councillor Mondli Gungubele, congratulated the class of 2013 on its “excellent performance”.
Clr Gungubele spoke after the Ministry of Basic Education released its results recently.
He said it was clear that the country’s level of education was on the right path, even though there was still “plenty of room for improvement”.
“These children have done us proud. They have raised the bar from the previous year and all we can hope for is an even better performance from the class of 2014,” said Clr Gungubele.
“The sooner our children realise that education is the key to the success of themselves and this country, the better the future prospects of South Africa,” he said.
As a former teacher himself, Clr Gungubele also congratulated teachers for their hard work and dedication in their job.
“Educators have a challenging job and despite the hardships they come across year in and year out, they continue to do a sterling job. Not only do teachers educate these children, they also deal with their social challenges and other personal matters. Despite this, they continue to achieve acceptable outcomes,” he said.
Clr Gungubele said with all stakeholders working together with government to improve the level of education in South Africa, the ultimate objective of a high standard of education for the country will be achieved.
