Partly-demolished house an eyesore

For eight months Pyramid Road residents have been faced with an unsightly, partly-demolished house.

Attempts to report the matter to council, as well as city planning departments, have fallen on deaf ears.

Neighbouring property owners told the NEWS that not only is the property unattractive, but two people have moved onto the property.

Demolition of the property began roughly 19 months ago and re-building came to a complete stop approximately eight months ago.

All that remains of the once large family home are piles of building rubble and several partly-built walls.

“There are two people staying on the property but none of the toilets in the house work,” said one resident, who asked not to be named.

The occupants of the partly-demolished house make use of a fire in the house for cooking and a telephone line is used to hang washing.

“Weeds and piles of building rubble are almost 180cm high in the front yard,” said the resident.

“This is not adding to the value of the properties in the area and it is an eyesore for all concerned,” she added.

The NEWS sent an enquiry to the marketing and communications department of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) for comment.

The enquiry was sent on January 27 and comment was requested by January 31.

At the time of going to print, no comment was received.
