The on-going water supply problems in Highway Gardens have been attributed to theft and vandalism.
According to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s (EMM) department of brand management and communications, the vandalism of a pressure reducing valve (PRV) situated on the corner of St Andrew’s and Minuach roads resulted in a number of burst pipes.
The PRV was repaired twice on February 20.
Ekurhuleni teams were dispatched to the area early in the morning to attend to all the burst pipes.
According to the department, teams had just finished their repair work when a call was received saying there was no water in Charmion Avenue.
“Upon investigation, it was found that the PRV was vandalised again, only this time some of the controlling features including the pilot valve were stolen,” said the department.
The result of the vandalism was that the teams had to once again attend to burst pipes in the area.
The PRV was repaired at 5pm on February 20.
The following day, contractors received another report of a burst water pipe on the corner of Chopin and Cunningham roads.
