Children go hungry

The children they take care of had to be told last week that they could not get a meal.

Bambanani, a non-profit organisation that takes care of orphans and children who are vulnerable and have suffered abuse, is in need of donations such as food.

Mrs Connie Welcome, the chairperson, said the children they take care of had to be told last week that they could not get a meal.

“We had to tell them we could not offer them a meal because we were waiting for donors to donate. We had to sell old clothing to raise funds to buy food and our funds are now depleted. The meal we give children is the last meal of the day,” she said.

Mrs Welcome said Bambanani, in Malvern, was conceptualised in 2007 and registered in August 2012 as a non-profit organisation.

Staff aim to help the children, who have been orphaned by HIV/Aids, grow into emotionally and psychologically stable adults.

“Bambanani has child-active caregivers. They are the eyes and ears of the organisation. They go door-to-door to check that the care children receive at home is adequate. They identify problems and offer basic counselling in trauma and bereavement, and advise people with HIV/Aids to attend the local clinic,” said Mrs Welcome.

Children receive a balanced meal, have access to computers at the local library, have their homework supervised, receive counselling, play sport, learn to grow food and are taught other life skills and receive help in language, communication and elementary business skills.

Mrs Welcome said Bambanani has 250 children up to the age of 18 years.

Bambanani is in need of food and gas for cooking.
