Be careful at ATMs

A woman was approached by someone while she was withdrawing money at an ATM in Cyrildene on March 29.

The community is urged to beware of criminals at ATMs.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said there were two incidents last week.

A woman was approached by someone while she was withdrawing money at an ATM in Cyrildene on March 29.

She was approached by a man after she had entered her pin number.

He cancelled the transaction, took her bank card and fled.

“When she called the bank, she was informed that cash had been taken from her account,” said Const Mashakane.

Another woman was also approached by a suspect at an ATM in Kensington on March 30.

“While using the ATM, she was approached by a man. He told the woman to enter her pin number but she refused. She cancelled her transaction but the card did not return,” said Const Mashakane.

The suspect fled the scene and the victim screamed for help.

“The security guards followed the suspect and apprehended him. The bank card was found in his possession. The police were called and the suspect was arrested,” said Const Mashakane.
