Youngster hopes to rekindle activities

Looking at the state in which Horwood’s Farm is currently in, made him want to embark on a project to bring back the buzzing atmosphere and to try having the stalls utilised again.

The community of Edenvale was brought together by youngsters attempting to rekindle the spark that once existed at Horwood’s Farm on Freedom Day.

Chad Alexander and his friend Tebogo Seleme, along with other youngsters, have wondered why things have changed over the years.

Alexander, who is also part of the Friends of Horwood Farm, recalled a time when the stalls at the park were occupied with different people selling various products. There also used to be a man who would play live music and the atmosphere was incredible.

“I remember when I was really young, there was one stall in which candles were sold and one could make their own candle art at that stall, which was awesome. I still have that candle at home,” he said.

Alexander said that since having those childhood memories and looking at the state in which Horwood’s Farm is currently in, made him want to embark on a project to bring back the buzzing atmosphere and to try having the stalls utilised again.

He approached local businesses to try and get them involved in the initiative, some showed interest but others did not get back to him.

“There are 32 stalls at Horwood’s Farm, but I was aiming to have at least 12 used on Freedom day. Of the people who confirmed, only two showed up. It is quite disappointing but we will keep trying to integrate unity and break through every barrier whether it is racial, financial or otherwise,” he said.

Alexander said the park already has the infrastructure to host markets, as the stalls are already there, even though they are rusty and have not been maintained over the years. Despite this, he believes the stalls can still be utilised and any money made from events will go back into fixing the park.

“All we want to see happen is people bringing their children to the park, having the stalls active again, having the park cleaned, revamped and maintained, to build a unified community,” said Alexander.
