Angolan couple robbed

Yet another Angolan couple was followed from the airport and robbed at a local hotel.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said an Angolan couple alleged they were booking into a hotel in Bruma on May 10 after arriving from the airport when they were approached by three suspects.

“The suspects pointed firearms at them and other guests. They demanded luggage and other personal belongings. One gunshot was fired on the roof of the hotel before the suspects fled the scene,” said Const Mashakane.

The suspects took luggage, cellular phones, a laptop and US dollars.

Earlier this year, the EXPRESS published an article in which a Cleveland SAPS police officer stated that several people who were followed from the airport and robbed at places of accommodation were Angolan citizens.

Some stories published in the EXPRESS included that of two dignitaries from the Angolan Parliament and their wives, who were robbed in Cyrildene.

The couples left OR Tambo Airport to go to the guest house they were staying at.

When they entered the premises, three men exited a vehicle and pointed firearms at them. The men robbed them and fled in a vehicle.

In a separate incident, a man who arrived at a local guest house was also shot after being followed from the airport. He died shortly after the incident.

At a recent public meeting, Warrant Officer Marx Crouse from the Cleveland SAPS, said it was established that most of the victims were people visiting South Africa to receive treatment at hospitals.

To try and address these crimes, the Cleveland SAPS established a guest house forum.

All owners of places of accommodation are urged to attend these meetings to discuss crime-related concerns and possible ways of preventing further attacks.
