Smoke kills baby

The incident took place at the corner of Cavendish and Hunter streets on Saturday, June 21.

A baby died from smoke inhalation in Yeoville.

The incident took place at the corner of Cavendish and Hunter streets on Saturday, June 21.

“The baby’s father went to work and left the child in the care of the mother. When he returned later that night, he knocked on the door and there was no response,” said Constable Thabo Malatji, of the Yeoville SAPS. According to Const Malatji, the man noticed smoke coming out of the room and he forced the door open. He found his wife and child lying on the floor.

“He called the paramedics and the child was certified dead on the scene. The wife was taken to hospital,” said Constable Malatji.

According to Const Malatji, the smoke was caused by coal.

“We appeal to residents to take precautions at this time of the year as it is understandably cold and different heating methods are applied,” said Const Malatji.

He said an inquest docket has been registered and is being investigated by the Yeoville SAPS. @JoburgJourno
