Attracting winter birds to your garden

There are many things you can do to keep them coming back and although one never owns a garden bird, they do become familiar with your garden and routine.

The cold winter weather has set in.

Not only does winter catch us by surprise every year, it also catches the birds too.

This past autumn has been particularly mild and the sudden cold will find them keeping close to buildings and in smaller gardens where the temperatures are not quite as extreme.

There are many things you can do to keep them coming back and although one never owns a garden bird, they do become familiar with your garden and routine.

You may even get to recognise some of them too.

There is something quite uplifting about having birds in the garden and they will always bring a positive energy with them.

Unless of course it is a weaver bird stripping your favourite tree for nests, but that is a whole different story of course. In that case, the little male is always positive – it’s only you who gets annoyed.

We love the sparkle they bring on even the coldest days when they take their bath in the middle of the day and then fly off to feed.

Every garden has its own bird character, from Cape Robins to the Fiscals, or in Bedfordview we have seen the return of some owls and of course the popular Loeries.

A feeding station for the garden birds in the best way to keep birds returning.

Different birds are attracted to different things, so a variety in your offering will make all the difference to what birds you attract.

Suet is high in protein and helps to fatten the birds up to protect them against the cold.

We recommend always adding suet to your feeding station this time of year.

Also try bird pudding, which has a nutty base and attracts different birds.

The bird seed bells and tower block feeders are great for attracting smaller birds as the doves and pigeons cannot hold onto them to feed.

Nectar feeders that attract honey birds to the garden are awesome and can also be used as a water dispenser.

Do not forget the fruit, this time of year there is very little in the line of berries and such to feed off of so you can keep them happy with an apple or even orange halves.

The more regularly you freshen up your feeding station by adding variety, the bigger the variety of bird that will visit your garden.
