Edenvale Lions host successful activation ahead of October tournament
Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy hosted its second activation event as preparations continue for The Vale Tournament, while a newly refurbished court is set to host more community basketball events.
Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy recently held a second successful activation event in preparation for The Vale Tournament.
Held in July, the activation event saw teams gather at Elba’s home court at the Edenvale Sports Grounds to face off in a set of friendly matches.
ELBA founder and coach Edson Makavan said the second activation went well, with six teams participating.

“We had a very good turnout of players with the sponsors joining us on the day and celebrating the day with us,” said Makavan.

He said club member Brother Simo provided food on the day.
Currently, the academy has Build It, Absa, Brand SA, Vodacom, Sportmans Warehouse and Aquelle as its sponsors.
Later this year, ELBA will stage the main TVT in October, with the academy intending to host the tournament in either Cape Town or Limpopo.
“Preparations for the main tournament are well underway,” said Makavan.
“From an organisation perspective, we are trying to attract more sponsors and are appealing to corporates to get on board and assist with sponsorship.

In addition to having a successful second activation event, Elba was able to boast it refurbished court thanks to the assistance of Build It.
Makavan said he was contacted by Marc de Sousa of Central Build It, who stepped in to assist.
“Marc told us that he had noticed all the good work we are doing for basketball and for the community.
“When he told us he was sending his crew to refurbish our court, I was speechless”
“This is one of the best outdoor courts in Ekurhuleni”

Makavan said that with the court in such good condition, the academy plans to host more events at its home grounds.

Looking ahead as the academy prepares for The Vale Tournament, Makavan said the next activation will be held in September.
It will be held at Melrose Arch.
