Very little happening in Edenvale

In the June 11 edition of the NEWS, it was reported that a court interdict against the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) prevents it from awarding road repair contracts.

One Edenglen resident is so fed up with poor service delivery that he plans to institute mass action to boycott paying rates and taxes.

“It is pretty obvious that other than Eskom power, sewerage and garbage collection, very little else is happening in Edenvale,” said Mr Rodney Haworth.

Mr Haworth said as a regular visitor to the Edenvale roads department, he has been told that no road repairs or maintenance will receive any attention in the near or maybe even distant future.

In the June 11 edition of the NEWS, it was reported that a court interdict against the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) prevents it from awarding road repair contracts.

This inability has resulted in large-scale deterioration of roads across Ekurhuleni.

In Edenvale, motorists are face with numerous potholes as well as continuously crumbling road surfaces.

It was also reported that in addition to being unable to award contracts to repair road surfaces, council also ordered all current contractors to halt the purchase of materials used to fill potholes.

“I have heard that paint bills were not paid and I have not seen the woman who took over from Lodewyk in the last six months,” said Mr Haworth.

He questioned how many officials draw salaries from council but do not work.

“What action is taken against such employees? Does the municipality employ any ghost workers and how come Ekurhuleni never has money to pay for projects or materials?” asked Mr Haworth.

He also wanted to know what the EMM does with the monthly rates and taxes.

“I am of the opinion that the finances of the EMM are mismanaged and I am tired of paying good money so that some officials can have a good life and we do not get what we deserve,” he said.

“It is time for action. I suggest a mass meeting of residents to discuss whether or not we should pay either half or none of our rates and taxes,” said Mr Haworth.

The brand and communications department of the EMM responded that maintenance of roads and storm water facilities were ongoing.

“Where work is of an emerging nature, we approve overtime on weekends to finalise,” the department said.

With regards to the performance of EMM employees, the department said it was unaware of such behaviour but investigations will be conducted.
