A 67 minute walk for Madiba at Sacred Heart College not only warmed up participants on a cold day, but also generated funds for charity.
Sacred Heart College’s primary school pupils, their teachers, parents and friends walked from 10am to 11:07am at the school on July 19.
The Parents’ Association sold bacon and egg rolls and the Grade six Learner Leadership committees organised various food stalls for worthy causes.
About R9 000 was raised from the stalls and the Big Walk.
Funds were raised for St. Jane’s de Chantal Home, a non profit institution taking care of HIV positive and abandoned children; HIVSA, the perinatal unit at Chris Baragwanath Hospital; the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, a family-centred hospital that is committed to providing the highest quality medical care to children. The Association for Autism and Nazareth House, a Catholic home run by nuns for HIV orphans and mentally challenged and frail aged women, also benefited from the funds raised.
“The Mandela Day 67-minute walk is a community-building event, when all the Sacred Heart pupils, parents and staff come together to carry on Madiba’s legacy,” said Ms Robyn Picas, the principal of Sacred Heart College Primary School.
