Policeman shot, injured in gunfight

A Jeppe SAPS police officer was shot and injured during a shootout at the George Goch Hostel on Saturday, July 26.

Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, the Jeppe SAPS communications officer, said police officers were patrolling the area when they saw three vehicles with people in each car.

“When they stopped, the occupants exited the vehicles and started shooting at the police. The officers shot back. All the suspects managed to escaped,” said W/O Munyai.

A police constable was shot in the right thigh and was taken to the Millpark Hospital.

W/O Munyai said the suspects fled on foot and that police officers checked the suspects’ vehicles.

“It was established that the cars, a silver grey Mercedez Benz, a white Audi A4 and a maroon Ford Focus, were reported as stolen at the Jeppe SAPS. A microwave and a bag containing clothes was found in one of the cars. A case of attempted murder has been opened for investigation,” said W/O Munyai.
